I would really like to train my dog how to rig for coons, but i only have one dog, so I dont have a dog box. But i would like to know how i could tie my dog out in the bed of my s 10 pickup so he would have enough slack to move and smell for coon, but not enough slack to the point where he could jump out and potentially hang himself. If anyone has any ideas, feel free to share as I think it would be great to teach my dog to strike coon from the bed of my truck.

that shouldnt be to hard. just run some cable across the bed of your pickup then put a pully on it and attach a small length of cable with a clip on one end to the pully then clip it to your dog. your dog couldnt jump out and it could go to each side of the bed. should work.....keith

Seems that if you run a chain over the tops of your fender wells from side to side get another chain and hook it in the center of chain # make it to where hound could step up on fender well but no further then that would stop possible hangin but also give it room to move from oneside to other freely and use it's nose. :?: without a stop the pully would alow it to get over the side.

I sometimes use a chain in the back with a lil short piece of chain to hook to the dog. They cant move too much but the dog really dont need to go side to side when rigging cause you are goin slow enough that they will catch a drift of the scent pretty easily. Ive been told by an older hunter who as about the best rig dogs in the area told me to make a rig dog you have to take him off the truck and make him show you the track and do it over and over till he finally starts to rig only the game that you want him to rig.

Thanks for the ideas. Do you all put your own rails on your dog boxes? Do you just weld them on there? What kind of material should the cable goin across the bed of the truck be? And what about the short chain that I would tie to my dog?

The dog will probably rig better on top of the box. There is more air to smell for the Dog on top of the box. The speed at which you rig depends on the dogs ability. but from 10 - 20 is average.

We don't use rails on our dogbox. Just rig them right off the top. We screwed/glued down some indoor/outdoor carpet. You can then drill a hole through the top and put a screw with the ring on it (forgive me I can't think of what they are called) my dogs are short enough I then just attach a coupler to it and then onto them. Voila they are rigging ;) We just run a tie strap with knots in it over the dogbox and then to the hooks in the bed of the truck. It also helps to hold the box still if it doesn't fit snug. We attach our couplers in-between the knots to keep the dogs from sliding over.

My dogs have never rigged with rails on... Just have never got around to making them. We can rig 3 dogs with no problems of anyone falling off of the box.

Here is a picture.. Not a great one.. We use to use leashes until we figured out the couplers work better for our shorter dogs. In this picture we still had the leashes.

I have also rigged them out of the back of the truck. I just tied them with a coupler to the hooks in the bed of the truck. They are too short for the dogs to jump out.. They don't get to move around as much but it works.

Don't you have a shop class in school that you can build a dogbox in? ;)

take a 4x8 sheet of plywood, lay it across the bed and mark and cut the extra off.......use some c clamps or something on each side to hold it down to the truck.......thats your platform.......easy......cheap.....now u can do what u want......if u want a cheap rail u could take woven wire fence ( the stiffer the better) then take two 2x4's 4' long and screw them down and use fencing staples to fasten it down......then just cut it so it tapers down toward the end of the platform.....and screw a hitching post ring down in the center........if u get over to wisconsin u can have my dogbox i built.....i dont have an s10 anymore

about the dog hanging itself, use a harness to clip it to the truckbed. Its a lot more difficult for a dog to injure itself suspended by a harness.
My old hound used to rig from the back seat of my Jeep with the windows open and a harness clipped to the seatbelt. Worked just fine. He could even do it with the windows closed if the vent fan was on. It was pretty amazing when he woke up from a sound sleep wide open!

Thanks everybody! I think im gonna go with connecting a cable across the bed of the truck bed and getting something that i can hook in the center of the cable going across, but something that wont be able to slide around on the cable. If anyone has any other ideas feel free to share. Thanks again!

if you want to rig your dog without a dog box-

attach short chain to a piece of plywood that just fits in truck bed

can use boards if u got em -- needs to be big enuff so he cant get off it and doesnt slide around

dog stands on it-- dont have to drill any holes in your truck and can take it out easily when your not using it -- cross chain between tie downs works ok if you have them in your truck - i would definately prefer chain over cable- you can adjust it as needed

i like the tie em to floor deal better because prevents dog from jumping all over cab and back window-

he just needs to get his nose to the edge- be very careful that chains are short enuff that he cant get off that board or get over side of truck
