I have two young redbone pups (just over a year old). One of them is very hyper and is learning pretty good and nothing scares him. Then the other one is more shy and is a bit slower. When he see's a gun come out he just tucks his tail and trys to find a place to hide or runs off. Has anyone got any ideas on how to get him broke of this?
Thank you

i would start out by making a lot of noise banging dishes around him when he is excited like at feeding and start clapping your hands to making load noise while he is eating if and when it stops bothering him start bringing the gun out when you feed him then start out firing it while hes eating use a rifle with 22 blanks eventually work up to a pistol with blanks take it slow do not rush him never push him to far make of him a lot and keep encouraging him it has worked for me in the past i have not had one like that in along time i learned to do this around all my dogs when they are young banging the dishes and stuff when there young and clapping your hands usually is all it ever takes hope this helps good luck. Larry

I'm assuming he's afraid of the actual shot itself rather than the physical appearance of the gun?

My dog isn't afraid of the shot, just the actual gun or anything that looks like a club, so if what I'm about to write isn't applicable then just ignore me! :D

I started by just walking around the house holding broomsticks or my rifle, or just sat watching TV holding the gun so he'd see there's nothing threatening about it. He wouldn't come near me for awhile. When he was a little more comfortable I'd start gently playing with him while holding a gun, and eventually led up to poking him with it while playing. He's still uncomfortable with it, but we've made a lot of progress.

my dog experienced his first gun shot the other day, it was a 10 gauge turkey gun, the first one startled him, but he seemed more curious about it than scared and he didnt run, he just kinda perked his ears up, so i guess i got lucky, im gonna work on the 22 with him from now on. when the girlfriend is playing with him in the yard i was just gonna crack a few off from the back porch.
