I'm looking to release a caged coon I have for my pup one of these coming nights to see how she does with it. The property I'm going to release on is primarily rolling mountain with a small creek running thru it. Also on this property are a couple small food plots with either low clover or higher but knocked over wheat. For the release of the coon and the benefit of my dog would anyone have a good opinion of releasing the coon either in the woods or in a food plot and hope the coon goes up just inside the woods? I want my pup to have a nice easy track but I don't want to release the coon and it go up a tree ten feet from the trap.

in the food plot. Give the pup a track to follow instead of 10 feet to the first tree

I would do the same and find a spot with smaller timber if you can, also you can never tell what they are going to do, ive had em come out of the cage and go up the first tree they find or come out and try and get out of dodge.
