Triggs have been used on bear. My Trigg ran fox and Coyote and had a very good nose. My Trigg Walker Pups have been good on yotes and fox. There were some Bear dogs in my Triggs bloodline. She seemed to have a bit of a better nose than my Walkers. Paul Conway.

Ive got a Trigg gyp right now Im breeding to one of my foxhounds , because she was a hard tree dog and he is an outstanding tree dog. I dont think that it is rare to find running hound that tree. You just have to go for the right stock, in the foxhound buisness looking for stock that trees you need to stay away from pen hunters for the most part. I have a couple running walkers who will run bear, and a couple that have treed bear. Over Half of my hounds will tree at a hole or a tree. Triggs are a strain of running hounds, but the right ones have great sense about them. If you want to try a walker/trigg cross I would do it, probably would be a good idea to make sure the line of triggs you use has a history of creating tree dogs.

i grew up hunting fox with my grandfather. he had several different hounds including a july. is a trigg a type of hound or dog from a particular blood line or breeder, kinda like a july. neither july or trigg are listed as a hound breed.

A trigg or a july is just a different strain of American Foxhound. The most well know and widely used foxhounds are walkers. Julys and Triggs are also foxhound but they are a different stock of dogs. When the walker dog was being created, so was a july, and a trigg, a birdsong, a maryland, pennmarydel, a bywater, a huspedth, a goodman and a bunch of other breeds that are mostly gone. Most go way back to the same origins, crossing english and irish stock on what was native here in america, bulky black and tan type hounds. But certian breeders bred so selectively to create dogs that work best for them in their area/terrian we ended up with several distinct strains of american foxhound. It is easy to tell some strains apart, some are not as easy. Alot of julys have longer hair, some are shaggy kinda like a golden retriever, percieved to be faster, but lack some in the nose department. A trait in the goodmans are that alot have glass eyes. Penmarydels are much larger bulkier and have a colder noses and loud mouths, and run slow, breed to run fox in fields that have had the crops cut off them already. There is a strain of triggs that are called Blue triggs, because the black blanket back has a slate blue tent to it. Most triggs are percieved to be medium to medium fast speed with good noses. Walkers are percieved to be medium fast to fast with decent nose, but very tough, hard to make quit. They are all american foxhounds as the breed, but completely different strains of hounds.

perk, thank you for your detailed explaintion of all the foxhounds. i had no idea there were/are so many. it just goes to show how little i know when i thought i knew something about the subject.

Hey There is a Fellow, on the Cross Bred Classifieds, that Claims to have a Fox Hound that will tree. Gyp Too. May be a good start for your Bear Coon Pack.

Here is an Open Reg, Treeing Walker, that Is Very Fast on the Track, and has Run down and Cought 7 Coons on the Ground. Trees Good, but a little Trashy, has Bayed a Couple Hogs, and Treed some Grinners.
Accurate as all get up, on Coon.
Who Knows? LOL

i have owned and hunted with a few trigg dogs. most folks down this way use them to run coyotes. they are run to catch type dogs. strike a track and drive it really fast and have lots of grit to catch at the end. this is a picture of a trigg dog that is my brothers dog. he will tree but is silent on a track. i had a full brother to this dog that died he was smokey colored grey. he would bark on a track but didnt have much of a mouth kinda of a horn fiest sound and a fiest chop on the tree. this dog in the picture has caught coons on the ground ahead of the other dogs. he has a good hound mouth when he does bark.
