I have been training broke bear dogs for thirty years. I started them all on caged coons with bear scent. Never had one tree a coon by themselves. Had have some "me too" with coon dogs. I will not tolerate it at all. Nothing ruins a bear hunt like a coon dog.
I did not ever start one on a hog as our woods are full of porkers and that will seriously mess up a bear hunt also. Just "perfume" your coon with bear scent and the dogs wont associate it with a coon. Not saying it smells like a bear but it doesnt smell like a coon either.
Hogs in a pen are great for starting dogs if you let them run hog or bear. You can get months ahead that way and also find out who has nerve and who has a nose. If my dogs wont bay a mean hog by themselves at 12 months the have to go. We dont have a bear season anymore so we run hogs year round in Norht Fl.
Oddly enough the hog training does make alot of sense I can see how it could help a pup be more cautious while hunting bear and become a better bay dog for those walking bears.

I'm in agreement with Ike and night hawk on the above.
If it trees I'm gonna tree it. I also use only one scent to train with "lion" but it doesn't matter which on ya use. Getting a young dog to use his nose and trail is key.
As Ike mentioned I'll move my hounds as well if I don't like the scent trail they've cut.
