Got my first dog 3 weeks ago hes 18 months old and wasnt really messed much. the guy i got him off of just didnt hunt him so he gave him to me, but he can track real well and find the tree but the problem im having is he wont stay and tree unless he can see the coon. Ive turned a few live coons loose without him knowing and he'll track all the way to tree then jump up on the tree and leave unless its a short enough tree for him to see the coon. People tell me hes "sight treeing" is this the case and how can i fix it?

Sounds like my redbone. I have a 7 month old male redbone and he won't tree unless he can see the hide as well. What i did is when he got off tree i whipped him and kept telling him to get on tree and when he does tree i reward him. Seems to be working some but it's being a slow process. Also tie him to the tree and walk away where he can't see or hear you for 10-20 minutes then he'll bark because he's scared but reward him when you come back to him. They either have it or they don't. If that doesn't work i'm sure he could make a good house dog. What breed? Hope i helped!!!!!

stay very close to him so when he hits a tree you see which one and can leash him up before he can leave. after a few times of this, and you shooting the coon out to him, he will start staying put
