I have a question about hunting squirrels and coons with one dog. I have a trained feist but then I have a 5 month old coon hound and I was thinking of taking my coonhound with me squirrel hunting since season is in. Cause my freind who helped train rock river ring and all them dogs and they said they hunted them on squirrel till they were going good on them then hunt coons. So I was just wandering what you think it would do if it would do good or harm.
Won't hurt a bit. Probably one of the best things you could do for the young hound. I sure wish we had more squirells in this country. My new 8 month old Leapard Cur treed one the other day while out walking on the river bottom. First squirell I had seen for a couple of years.
one problem if your dog has a good nose it will be treeing squirrel nest at night.but if you dont mind walking to trees with nest in them than it wont be a problem
hey dont even worry about it i have my other dog hunting coyte, coon, squirrel, and he does what i do the only thing is he will hunt what he finds first but you have to train him on what you want he knows when we go in the morn squirrel and at the evening is coyte and at night is coon thats what i do so you dont have a prob.
does anybody have a dog they have that will hunt squirrels in the day and coons at night? im thinkin bout startin my pup on both. im just afraid that it would lead to alot of slick trees at night on count of squirrels instead of coon
I hunt my dogs on both.Sometimes I'll tree squirrels at night but not often. Some dogs are just slick treeing machines and people say it squirrels.I say do what you enjoy.
I have a cur dog that is is a squirrel dog during the day and coon dog at night. I have treed some squirrels on full moon nights but it's not very often. One problem is you need to wait 30 or 45 mins after dark to start coon hunting or you will still be treeing squirrels.
My grandpa has raised and trained pups on squirrels and later made them gr ntch! I don't care.what my dog puts up a tree as a pup! Later on, they will get on coon and have no interest for anything else

Hi, I have a 7 month old Catahoula mix that I would like to train as a coon\squirrel dog. I am completely new to training any kind of hunting dog so ANY advice is greatly appreciated.
Here is a list of things he has started doing on his own: *Actively looking for squirrels on the ground *Chasing them up the tree and jumping up onto the tree
Here is a list of things I would like him to do: *Bark - he never barks *Stay at the tree instead of losing interest *Pay attention to what's above him instead of keeping his attention on the ground
Again, I am completely new to this so if there is anything else he should be doing that I left out feel free to let me know!
He is fairly well trained, he comes on command but its not 100% His stay is 100%
