Well, pretty strong opinions here, I didn't have any idea that I was touching on a topic of such debate. I understand both viewpoints. Pros and cons to both open and seperate pens. I'll have to do a little more thinking on the subject before I build.

i forgot to say one thing. about those hounds being in one common kennel. they ate from one common trouff. it was a truck tire that was split in half, around the circumference.
that bassett kennell, empire is one heck of a dog operation. just imagine what someone coud do for a really good dog breed, like a plott or redbone.

I like em seperate. I know what thier eating. I know when thier not eating. I know when I look at a stool who's it is. I know I will have no fights. I know I will have no unwanted pregnancies. I know how much worm medication, Ivermec, etc they've gotten. I've run my hounds together on the outside after kenneling them seperate with no problems. We also run three, four or more hounds together from different kennels with no problems.
There's more than one way to skin a cat though it's what works for you and what your happy with. There just my reasons and experience- solid I think, but not the only way. Gotta go cut some firewood. enjoy, Paul Conway.

i like your way of thinking conway... i separate my coonhounds in the kennel but my beagles stay in one pen.. well the females stay in one pen and the males in the other. i've had several males fight over a female that was ready. when one got terribly hurt is when i started separatin my males and females just what i like i guess still run fine together.

croatankid wrote: i appreciate your reasoning for keeping each dog in his own cell. but, my grandfather used to keep his pack of fox hounds in one common pen and used one common house. he had one pen for grown dogs and one pen for pups and young dog. he had several dogs in each pen. it was a long time ago, i was just a teenager at the time, but i don't recall him ever having a problem. i was his unpaid servant. i cleaned the pens, de-ticked the dogs after each outing, drove the willis (like a jeep suv), and helped with the loading and unloading of dogs. i can't explain why or how he got by with this set up. we, my familly, also had a common pen with a common house with several hounds and didn't have a problem. if i were to build a kennel, i would have individual cells. I started my driving with a willis to. And all our dogs stayed in one pen. Never fought. But they were taught very hard not to.

I have seen the pics of all the different kennels and they seem small for what I am use to. Not judging by no means just wondering and curious as to why y'all build a kennel at whatever size you choose. I have a pup that I have chained right now and am building a pen in near future, just looking for some insight on sizes.

I got one concrete slab thats 18ft by 8. I split it for two pens 8x9. I got antoher that is 16x 22 split 3times. 8.5 x 16. all 6ft chainlink with 1 1/4 tubing its heavy chainlink not the lightest but dang sure dont have problems. In also all pens have slope with a drain system to wash the mess away.
I have 13 running walkers(foxhounds) for coyotes. In yes we got some pens as big as 40ft by 60ft 6ft tall chainlink. Usally 2 3hounds in a pen that size. What i have notcied over the years foxhounds get along alot better then coonhounds. yes we have our battles. But we put 3 coonhounds in that pen in god dang it seemed like everyday feeding id have to go in and break crap up we switched what we thought was one in another would start it. Just didnt work for use.
