i currently have 2 large outside kennels for my two dogs. they are 20'x20' outside and they have access to a 4x8 inside box. i use washed gravel for the floor which worked pretty good in the warm weather. well we are having a thaw right now and thereis a lot of manure in the kennels as the snow melts. it's hard to pick up with anything right now because it is still partially frozen. i was wondering if i could spread some lime on the ground in the kennel to break up the manure. will this hurt the dogs feet? might be a silly question but i really don't know has anyone done this thanks.. as soon as it gets warmer i'm building raised kennels it's much more healthier. thanks for any input..

I would not expose your dogs to that much lime in that kind of enclosure.

Back in 2006, I had 3 dogs get into some wet lime and it wasn't pretty......it burned their pads up bad.

Just wondering why the lime would have burned the dogs feet. because i work at a large dairy and we bedded cattle with lime for a few years and they loved it. We use sand now just wondering why that would hurt them. Also were we hunt we have alot of lime stone bluffs and holes and have never had problems like that wet or dry.

Haven't a clue but I know for a fact it happened.

I'm not a farmer, but I know I give my dogs cow hooves and cow legs to chew on and a cow's foot and a dog's foot is 100% different.

Perhaps since cow have hooves, they have the extra protection since they don't have pads like dogs.

I use lime in my kennels on a weekly basis to help cut down on the urine odor and have had no problem with regard to adverse affects on my dogs.

Probably seeing as how I seen it happened, was right there when it happened, and saw the results on the 3 dogs paws immedieately after it happened, I'd say I have no doubt that the wet lime they got into minutes earlier was the cause.

I have no problem using cedar in dog boxes, but have read post from others who have had issues with cedar and their dogs.

I know what wet lime did to those 3 dog's paws..........I seen it with my own eyes.

lime mixed with water makes hydrogen gas, it will get up to 250 deg.
I am a materials spec. for highway const. and lime is often used to stabalize subgrades. disk it into soil and add water and it will steam and become very hot, then it makes the sub grade hard for a good surface. take a hand full of lime and put it in a bowl and put a small amount of water in it and mix it up. put a thermometer in their. it is great for kennels but not with lots of moisture in the soil or when rain is predicted.

Does anyone use lime under their kennels? I need to know if it will hurt dogs if they were to walk on the lime. Thanks for the help.

I work in a lime mine and we make and produce many kinds of lime hydrated and dehydrated are very much not alike. hydrated lime will not react to water dehydrated lime will have a violent reaction with water or any kind of liquid. When introduced it heats to 212 degrees right away it will burn any flesh it comes in contact with. Raw lime stone does not react. it is only when it has been procesed that it acts this way. I would not use lime in any way around my dogs!!!
