I bought a new live trap a few weeks ago and twice i've checked it and it has been set off with no signs that anything has been near it. Any ideas why it could be doing this? I bought it at tractor supply if that makes a differance. What should i use as bait also? I've been using can cat food, but it doesn't seem to be working.

I have two traps that I bought from tractor supply. They are very sensitive and can be set off very easily. It could very well be something like a squirrel or chipmunk trying to figure out what it is. As for the bait, I use canned dog food for coon, i've had better luck with it than tuna or anything else. Also found that the smaller of the two traps I have seems to work better. Why i have no clue. Hope this helps.

I've had coon reach in at the bait from the side, and trip it, I put some smaller wire mesh on both sides of the trap so they can't reach in there. Look at the trigger mechanism also, you might have to bend it a little to make it so it doesn't spring so easy. I use a whole can of sardines, and wire tie it to the bait pan so it won't move. Canned Mackerel works good too.
