I have skinned probably 80-100 coon with that exact stripper. it works good for me. Just make sure you split the tail for a ways before you try and pull it and it will work just fine.

Worry more about skinning down the back farther so you dont bobtail the coon, i used that stripper for a long time but it broke when it got super cold out so i took a peice of #9 wire and bent it 180 degrees and cut it so it looks like a long U. It works great. And yes do cut down the center of the tail for about 3 inches or so.

I am using a plastic one now like above. I lost my favorite last fall. My old time hunting buddy from years gone by and died about 7 or 8 years ago made one and gave to me about 20 some years ago. It was made out of wire like #9, but was stiffer and would not bend. It was bent in a very sharp V shape with one side being longer than the other and that end bent on around to where it almost met the shorter end, but lacking about 1/2 inch from meeting. He painted it orange so that it could be seen if dropped in the leaves. Everytime I skinned a coon, I would say, "This one's for Ol Melvin." I don't know if it really did any better, just the thought of taking memories hunting with me.

I like using the plastic one cause it wont poke you like wire would, and it has that other notch cut into it for squirrel too.

Just pick you up a couple sticks about 4 inches long, big around as your pinky, Place one on each side, grab the sticks so the tail is between your 2 middle fingers, sqeeze and pull, hide will come right off.
