I am looking to do the same thing. I see them around the northern/eastern San Diego county area. My dogs are puppies and without direction I fear they might end up just as pets. I havent had any luck finding anyone with that has dogs that hunts to learn from.

Too bad your so far away or I'd help you out. A good coon hound should have enough instinct to run a track and tree with some guidence. Get a shock system first and work on basic obedience like come stay ect . When the dog shows intrest in running a track get a coon hide and do a drag. Stay away from bottled scents they just dont smell the same as a real coon. When they start finishing the track take them hunting in a coon rich area. Make sure you show them coons. And be sure to break them off deer skunks ect and you will have a coon dog dont give up.
