It depends on the dog. If it is a skiddish dog I would wait at least a week, and for that whole week I would put it on a chain and mess with it everyday, make buddies with it make it trust you and them you should be ok. If it is a super friendly dog I would still wait a few days and do the same thing.

IF Im trying out a dog thats supposed to be a broke dog.I wait a day or two then start hunting the dog.. Just Because most guys only give about a 2 week try out on most dogs. Most good broke dogs dont care whos hunting them.As long as they get to go hunting..LOL..I like to keep a Young dog just old enough to hunt or a started dog about a week before hunting it...That just gives them time to bond with you.The last thing I want is to try to catch a dog thats hard to handle...But with any new dog you should work with them as much as possible.Just walking them and handling them as much as possible before hunting them. You would be surprized how many dogs dont get that from there last owners. They just soak it up and cant get enough of it...A dog that likes you will handle so much better and try to please you. More than a dog that does not like to be handled at all.........

you have to decide that..... if its timid maybe you should wait a while but, if its used to diff handlers you should be ok. I have hunted hounds that same night i got them and they were ok.

Pet the dog when you get him and when you get where you're going. If the dog likes it he'll let you know. If it tries to get away from you then I'd take it home and spend time getting use to one another. There is nothing more fun than spending the night in the woods trying to get your hands on a dog that won't have anything to do with you!
